Vision Screening

"Do Good" was the chosen motto even before the Greek Letters Delta Gamma were selected.

Vision....our most precious sense. Unexplainable to those without it; irreplaceable to those who have it. Protecting the gift of sight is one of Delta Gamma's highest priorities. There was a certification class for all groups held Saturday, January 29th.
If you are interested in volunteering a few hours during the week, please call Shelley Sturges or Peggy Stephens for details.
During 2003 through 2004 we screened 1485 children, totalling 452 hours by 56 volunteers. There is always a need for more volunteers (certified or not), please consider the certification class—it's free and good for 5 years!

If you can help out with any of the Open Vision Screenings or you are interested in becoming certified to vision screen, please contact Shelley Sturges at: shelley1956@yahoo.com. You do not have to be certified to help out!

Did You Know......

Dallas Delta Gamma's Preschool Vision Screening program has been going on since the early 50s.

At that time, the National Association for Prevention of Blindness contacted our alumnae group (this was before there was a PB office here). Betty Davis and Ginny Williamson were trained to begin our project. So over cups of coffee at Betty's kitchen table they started the ball rolling.

By the time the 60s came, teams sometime consisted of 4 DGs— 3 got to go screen and one baby-sat everybody's kids. Then next time it was someone else's turn. We might even come back from screening, put the kids down for a nap and we'd play bridge.

Evelyn Chatfield and Pat Wallis were working girls, but they were our recorders (meaning they counted thousands of registration forms and kept count of how many we screened for the year) for 10 or more years. Now that they have retired from the business world they are our most avid screeners now...yeah!

At that time there was no public kindergarten so you can imagine how busy we were. Then, more and more of our ladies went to work so our roster of volunteers became smaller. Public kindergarten came in and a lot of the private schools closed.

Now, with more and more kids out there the schools have blossomed on every corner and our services are being called on all the time. Seventy-five DGs (alumnae and collegians) family and friends screened almost 2000 kids in 2001-02 in 35 schools.

We would like to grow, and we need more volunteers. Any of you "stay-at-home moms", retired ladies (we can use men too), and anybody ready to screen after taking a hiatus could give a few hours a year to our SO worthwhile project that gives us so much pride after 50+ years of "Doing Good" in our community.
